Gays and lesbians who develop problems with drugs and alcohol have the option of going to a drug rehabilitation center that is specifically intended for gays or lesbians. Making the decision to enroll into one of these programs is a great first step towards recovery. While in treatment recovering addicts not only deal with their problems with drugs and/or alcohol but also handle other emotional and personal issues they are having difficulties with. Gays and Lesbians in recovery take a closer look at how their destructive behavior was a result of inner feelings left unresolved. Counseling and/or therapy helps in resolving issues with isolation, shame, discomfort in one's own skin, feelings of rejection, etc. Once rehabilitation is complete they will be able to feel more secure about who they are and know that drugs and alcohol is not the solution.
