Gays and lesbians who develop problems with drugs and alcohol have the choice of attending a drug treatment center that is specifically intended for gays or lesbians. Deciding to enroll into one of these programs is an excellent first step towards recovery. While in treatment recovering addicts not only deal with their issues with drugs and/or alcohol but also work on other emotional and personal problems they are having difficulties with. Gays and Lesbians in recovery examine how their destructive behavior was a result of inner feelings left unresolved. Counseling and/or therapy aids in resolving issues with shame, Isolation, discomfort in one's own skin, feelings of rejection, etc. Once rehabilitation is complete they will be able to feel stronger about who they are and be able to live happily without the desire to use drugs.
