The tragedy of the drug babies withdrawal

THE number of babies born addicted to drugs in Greater Manchester has soared to an all-time high.
During the past year, more than 300 children came into the world in local hospitals affected by their mothers' habits.

Many of the newborn babies have to go through the trauma of withdrawal. Some even have to be given morphine in a last-ditch attempt to cure their addiction.

All hospitals in Greater Manchester are now geared up to treating pregnant addicts - women from all social classes hooked on heroin, crack cocaine, tranquillisers and the heroin substitute methadone - as their numbers continue to rise.
Many hospitals have found the figures have doubled or even trebled over the last 10 years.

The figures will shock many, but medics have welcomed the trend as evidence that more women are asking for help.
