Drinking and driving, or driving while under the influence are severe offenses not to be taken lightly. Although each state has its own way of handling DUI/DWI offenders, there are some generalities that can be expected. Depending on the severity of the driver's intoxication and how strict the state laws are, they may have to serve time in jail for their offense. Once this is completed they will most likely have further retribution to do in order to drive a vehicle again. Many states require the person to go through counseling and/or therapy to aid in their recovery process. The state will define a set number of therapy hours that the DUI/DWI offender will need to attend.
