Gays and lesbians who are having problems with drug abuse have the option of attending a drug treatment program that is specifically designed for gays or lesbians. Choosing to attend one of these programs is an excellent first step towards recovery. During rehabilitation recovering addicts not only address their problems with drugs and/or alcohol but also address other emotional and personal issues they are having difficulties with. Gays and Lesbians in treatment take a closer look at how their destructive behavior was a result of inner feelings left unresolved. Counseling and/or therapy helps in resolving issues with isolation, shame, discomfort in one's own skin, feelings of rejection, etc. Once rehabilitation is complete they will be able to feel more secure about who they are and be able to live happily without the desire to use drugs.
