Gays and lesbians who develop problems with drugs and alcohol have the choice of going to a drug rehabilitation center that is specially designed for gays or lesbians. Making the decision to enroll into one of these programs is a great first step towards recovery. During rehabilitation recovering addicts not only deal with their issues with drugs and/or alcohol but also work on other emotional and personal problems they are having difficulties with. Gays and Lesbians in recovery take a closer look at how their destructive behavior was a result of inner feelings left unresolved. Counseling and/or therapy helps in resolving issues with isolation, shame, discomfort in one's own skin, feelings of rejection, etc. Once rehabilitation is complete they will be able to feel stronger about who they are and know that drugs and alcohol is not the solution.
