Facts

  • Barbiturates are prescribed as anticonvulsants, sedatives, and general anesthetics but can also induce euphoria, elation, and uninhibited behavior which make them candidates for abuse. If individuals suddenly cease using the barbiturates, symptoms of withdrawal syndrome appear 12-20 hours after the last dose.
  • Relapsing back into drug use after taking part in a drug rehab program is possible, with relapse rates similar to those for other chronic medical illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma that also have both physiological and behavioral components.
  • Youth who cohabit with alcoholics tend to score lower on tests in regards to family cohesion, intellectual and cultural orientation, recreational orientation, and independence.
  • Stress and other environmental and social factors can hinder attainment of continued drug abstinence and make drug relapse imminent.

Palos Hills - Medicare

Substance abuse and addiction affects every race, age and gender. For substance abusers that are 65 years or older, Medicare is an option to pay for some if not all of their drug rehabilitation. Medicare insurance will cover the treatment of drug addiction or alcoholism in both outpatient and inpatient settings, as long as certain requirements are met. The addict must receive services from a Medicare-participating facility or provider. The drug addicted person's doctor states that the services requested are medically necessary and that the patient's doctor creates the plan of treatment to be carried out. Also, Medicare will only cover a total of 190 days in a psychiatric hospital for the individual's entire lifetime.
